Dental implants, dental crown, dental bridge…are you confused?. Here’s a short guide to help you figure out these different procedures used by your team of professionals here at Santé Dentaire VMR.
Before diving into the subject, your dentist will first of all do a complete dental checkup to assess the situation and therefore be able to offer you the solution that best fits you.
A dental implant is what will replace the root of a natural tooth, which is either missing or extracted. Made from titanium, dental implants are secured in the jawbone and they enable the replacement teeth to be fixed (crowns or dental bridges).
One fact to be noted is that some people, like the ones that have uncontrolled diabetes, cannot receive implants. Additionally, some people lack sufficient bone volume or have a bone structure that doesn’t allow to properly position implants. If so, they will not be able to receive any dental implants.
When the root is still found or when an implant has been done, it is possible to opt for a dental crown that will be fixated to the root or to the implant. Dental crowns have the appearance of a natural tooth and can also be used to conceal a discolored or deformed tooth.
Different types of dental crowns exist: metallic (in gold), composite material, porcelain or ceramic metallic.
If a patient doesn’t have any roots and can’t receive a dental implant for the reasons stated above, a dental bridge might be the ideal solution. Bridgework is a technique that allows to firmly secure and support the artificial tooth by attaching it to the adjacent teeth via metal frames coated with porcelain.
In order to accomplish this, your dentist will shape the adjacent teeth so that he can attach the custom-made dental bridge. The dentist will then secure the piece permanently.
